Book Spotlight: A Pound of Flesh by Stuart S. Laing

Edinburgh 1745.

Deep beneath the rain soaked and wind scoured streets of the city a foul crime committed in the dark of night leaves two men lying dead in a dank cellar. A bankrupt young nobleman with an addiction to the twin vices of gambling and loose women stands accused of the horrific double murder and all the evidence seems to point towards his guilt. In desperation his lawyer turns to the one man in Edinburgh who can save him from the hangman's noose.

Robert Young of Newbiggin.

He is a young man who has earned a reputation amongst the city's legal fraternity for being the one person who can root out the truth by venturing into the capital's criminal underbelly. His investigation leads from the elegant drawing rooms of Edinburgh's high society to the city's most infamous brothel and into the grim hovels of the lowest alehouses on the Cowgate.

But as more bodies are discovered Robert Young is forced to confront the possibility that his client may actually be guilty!

About the Author

Born in 1966 and raised on the east coast of Scotland in the ancient Pictish Kingdom of Fife. Married to a wonderful woman for 19 years and we have been blessed with a beautiful daughter. I really have to say thank-you to my wife for allowing me to spend so much time in the 18th Century when there are jobs in the 21st Century probably requiring my attention!

I have always been fascinated by the history of Edinburgh and have spend most of my adult life studying Scottish history in all its aspects but always find myself being drawn back to the cobbled streets of the Old Town.

I would urge all visitors to Scotland's ancient capital to (briefly) venture into one of the narrow closes running down from the Royal Mile to get a flavour of how alive with mischief, mayhem, love and laughter these streets once were.

Interview with Author Hunter S. Jones

Picture ABLL would like to welcome author Hunter S. Jones. Sit back with a comforting drink and enjoy.

What made you decide to write a book?

Truth? Fiction? Unique combination of the two? I have always wanted to write a book. Thank you for asking Rebecca. A change a fortune a few months ago gave me enough time to research and write a book.

You write erotica. Why did you choose that genre?

My novel is explicit fiction, erotic fiction, erotica, horror, some readers classify it as occult. It’s been called an allegory. Different readers appear to get something different from Fables of the Reconstruction.  Really, it is best left to interpretation by the readers. I am thankful that they are reading it and taking the time to analyze it. Actually, the story and the genre chose me. As many authors will tell you, the characters will ‘talk’ to you until you tell their story.

What makes your books so different?

It begins with and invocation to Pomba Gira, the Goddess of the guitar. It examines the zombie story based on the Haitian and Creole Voodoo legends. It is set in Victorian London, in the notorious Whitechapel District but it has a contemporary, unique ending. It’s a bizarre little book.

How much of your own experiences do you put into your books?

The only personal experiences I have in this book are the love of global cultures, the love of the supernatural and a few very vivid dreams.

I am very open to writing as an experimental art form. After all, I am Southern and there was no bigger proponent of experimental writing techniques than William Faulkner. So many people, even today, get caught up in the mechanics and composition. Writing is an art form and we can go wherever our artistic expression takes us.

If you were in a crowd, how would you stand out?

Great question, yet again. Do you mean how would I stand out or how would my book stand out? Personally, I stand out because I am a woman who is almost six feet tall.

What books are your favorite that you have read more than once?

The Bible, The Mists of Avalon, The Great Gatsby, Interview with the Vampire, Gone With The Wind.

How often do you get to read for pleasure?

Everyday.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned as a writer?

The greatest lesson learned as a writer is that every day and every publication will teach you a new lesson. That, and to trust my artistic instincts.

Have you thought about writing for any other genres?

Yes, I write/blog about music, fashion, and environmental issues. You can find my music blog on Expats Post.

 www.ExPatsPost.com

What are you working on now?

Currently, I am in edits for a short story that will be published as part of an anthology from Moon Rose Publishing. The anthology is named A Celtic Tapestry and will be released March 21, 2013. It’s a collection of some of the hottest names in indie publishing and I am honored to be part of the team.

There’s also a series of experimental short stories, sexy vignettes, whatever I decide to add—called Tales from a New Amsterdam.  The first story was released last week and it reached #15 on Amazon.com. . There again, I am very appreciative of everyone who took the time to download the storyFables Book 2, Reconstruction of the Fables will be released Spring of 2013 as well.

Much more is on the way. All shall be revealed at a future date.

Thank you for hosting me on your site! Cheers and continued success for 2013!

Hunter, thanks for stopping by.

Excerpt:
When he made it to the office, he signed the necessary papers and waited as the man finished his transaction. Lazily, he leaned on the counter and nonchalantly glanced at a hot looking man that stood less than twenty feet away. Malik grinned and moistened his lips in the gorgeous stranger’s direction.
Damn.
The attractive guy gave him more than an eye and winked. Obviously, he plays on my team. His lush brown-and-blond hair barely kissed his shoulders. Beautiful azure eyes the same color as the Pacific. Lips so slim and kissable, Malik knew he could enjoy them for hours. Wicked visions crossed his mind as he eyed the scruff on the man’s cheeks. He liked a little roughness when making love.
The snug, black shirt fit well, hugging his bulging muscles. Malik eyed the ink that peeked from under one sleeve and salivated. His skinny, black jeans clung to his taut buttocks; Malik’s own trousers felt a little tight in the crotch. “Mhmmm.” Malik tried to keep his stares from being obvious to the clerk.
Would the hot man like to play with him a little? Malik sure hoped so.
It had been a long while since his last fuck. He’d spent the time searching for employment, going to job fairs, and not getting any call backs. Malik had remained so focused on getting a job; he’d ignored the signals of his groin needing a release from other than his own hand. Too long. He headed for the door and wished the handsome man would follow.
Maybe it’s time to stop looking for work and attempt to find a man.
Just when he stepped out, a voice stopped him.
“Hey.”
Malik slowly turned around. It was indeed him, the hottie he’d been eyeing. It shocked Malik to see the guy was actually speaking to him. “Hello.” Malik was taken aback by the guy speaking to him, but he guessed he warranted a greeting when they exchanged more than a passing glance.
The man stepped closer to him and held out his hand. “Name’s Camdyn. And you are?”
“Malik.” He accepted the handshake and returned it firmly. “Nice to meet you.” He raised an eyebrow.
“Same here.” Malik noticed Camdyn continued to hold on to his palm. Of course he didn’t mind; it felt unexpectedly soft and warm. “Um, you been comin’ here a while?”
“Yeah, I um…” Malik stopped short and bit his lip. He tried not to sound too excited. This was the last place he’d expected to be picked up at. The shooting range? Malik would’ve never thought of this place to meet other gay men.
“I been around, but I just got back in town.”
“Yeah? I’m guessin’ from the getup you served in the Army.”
“Uh huh… I um… yeah, let’s go outside.” Quickly, he pulled his hands away, even though he didn’t want to. Surely, he wanted to talk with Camdyn some more, but away from others coming in and out of the shop. He felt a little uncomfortable being picked up at some place so manly, but in a way, he liked it.

My Thoughts

I have been a practicing  pagan for close to ten years, and while I don't follow any one path, I enjoy learning about all different traditions. Dance of the Mystai is about a pagan path called the Mystai that stemmed from the Dianic tradition but has since become something unique and beautiful in its own right. Their patron Goddess is Hecate, though other Goddesses are honored as well. This book is an assortment of essays, poetry, artwork and rituals that are spiritually fulfilling as well as a beginner's look into the mysteries of the Mystai.

Dance of the Mystai resonated with me for several reasons. I love their focus on woman and the sisterhood. The Mystai have created a group that focuses on the needs of all woman from all around the world. It doesn't matter if they are gay, straight or transgender--all woman can find a place with this group. There focus is on strengthening the woman in mind, body, and spirit. Their ideas on feminism were enlightening and thought provoking.  I also love that they don't place any one woman above the others. The more experienced members are called "mentor sisters". They guide the new generation in the path but never place themselves on a pedestal.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who follows the path of the Goddess. Whether you are new to the Craft or have been practicing for decades, this book has something for everyone. The essays are often heart warming, the poetry is beautiful, and the rituals are empowering. Every pagan woman should have the Dance of their Mystai on their spiritual bookshelf.

Spotlight: Mates Since Birth by Miranda Stoew

Who knew one little mark could bond them together for eternity.

When a stranger shows up in her front yard claiming he’s her mate, Ari Fallow wants to laugh in Dane Griffin’s face. But the sleek, sophisticated jaguar makes her hormones hum with a desire she can’t deny. She almost wants to believe his claim that she’s been his since birth.

Her father, however, is still sore over the fact Dane marked her when she was only minutes old. After summoning a pack of wolves to their quiet community for Ari to make her own decision about which male she wants, Dane's original plan to sever his ties to Ari fly out the window. He can’t lose her again. This time, he's playing for keeps.

Excerpt:
Dane took Ari to the changing table and laid her down so he could spread the blanket open and get a good look.
She was so small. A month premature, according to all the adults. But she was still perfectly formed, perfect in every way, except for the blood and slime covering her from head to toe.
Wanting it off, he morphed into his jaguar and swiped out his tongue, letting his animal instincts take over as he cleaned her, licking her spotless. Ari allowed the ministration for a while but grew fussy toward the end; he could feel her hunger pangs in his own belly as hers cramped, needing nourishment.
“Don’t worry,” he assured after flashing back into his human form so he could smooth his hand over her thick, dark hair and rewrap her. “Once your mommy’s better, she’ll give you a great big drink. Doesn’t that sound good?”
But no noise rolled down the hall, not even Jaycee’s screams. He picked Ari up and paced the floor with her, jiggling her to keep her happy. But she could feel his tension and fear, and grew upset.
He wasn’t sure how long he could honestly comfort her. What if Jaycee didn’t get better? What if she died?
Ari began to cry in earnest.
He panicked.
If his nanny died, who would take care of her baby? His Ari. He needed to look after her safety himself. He needed to ensure she stayed healthy. Alive.
Instinctively, he knew what to do.
Laying Ari back on the changing table, he rolled her tiny body onto its side, facing her away from him, and lowered her blanket just enough to expose her nape. After placing a brief kiss to the tender spot, he sank his teeth into her flesh, his jaguar canines growing just enough to impale.
Initially, she jerked and whined, but as he poured strength and life into her, she settled and relaxed, then cooed. When he retracted the fangs and licked the bite closed, she let out a little sigh and closed her eyes as if ready for a peaceful nap. Dane gathered her back into his arms, not fully comprehending what he’d done, simply knowing he’d fixed her for the time being.
Vaguely, he understood he’d bonded her life force to his. But that was okay with him; he already knew she was his. Physically biting her merely seemed like a symbolic act at this point. He didn’t regret it at all; it would ensure she wouldn’t immediately starve to death.
Ari slumbered against him, her cheek resting alongside his heartbeat as the two organs thumped in sync with each other. He watched her as he sat quiet in the nursery’s rocking chair, soaking in every feature of her delicate, newborn face. He felt calmer now that he’d taken measures to protect her. With his own energy now swirling inside her, she had a better chance of survival.
He’d just kissed her temple when Knox appeared in the doorway. “Where’s the baby?” he asked in a quiet, hushed voice. “Jaycee wants to see her.”
“Jaycee’s awake?” Dane asked, springing to his feet and waking Ari in the process. “Is she okay?”
Ari’s father nodded. “She’s weak, but I think she’ll be fine. Give me the baby.”
Dane resisted the urge to grip Ari tighter. A full-blood wolf shifter, Knox Roland was one scary male. Like Darth Vader, he could probably cut off Dane’s air supply by just looking at him.
Three-fourths human, Dane’s blood was so diluted, he knew he would never stand a chance against a full shape-shifter like Knox. Plus, Knox was Ari’s father. He couldn’t begrudge Ari her father, so he regretfully held the infant out, trying not to feel bereft when Knox scooped her up and paused a moment to stare in awe at her face.
“She’s so perfect,” he whispered, sounding stunned.
Of course she was perfect, Dane wanted to give the indignant mutter. How could his Ari be anything other than perfect? He bristled when Knox leaned down to nuzzle his nose against her cheek. He wasn’t sure why he wanted to be the only male to touch her, but even her own father’s attention chafed him raw, an abrasive irritation.
Knox barely grazed her delicate skin, however, before he paused and yanked back with a growl. His nose twitching, he slowly pinned an accusing stare on Dane.
“My God,” he whispered, sounding horrified. “What have you done, cub?”
Dane blinked, startled the wolf shifter had been able to smell the bond…but even more startled Knox did not look pleased by it.
“I-I-I protected her,” he said, feeling suddenly unsure of his actions.
Shouldn’t Knox be happy he’d taken measures to keep Ari safe? He knew a blood relative couldn’t bond with her; why wasn’t Knox pleased Dane had stepped in to help?
“You didn’t protect her,” Knox boomed, looking angry enough to slaughter Dane. “You just bonded with her. Do you even know what that means? You made her your mate.”
Dane blinked. He had?
Oh, well. His mother and father were mates. Knox and Jaycee were mates. Since he already knew Ari would always be his, he didn’t mind if she was his mate. And just because his mom and dad liked to kiss a lot and Knox and Jaycee were constantly hugging each other, didn’t mean he and Ari had to do anything gross like that. They would be the awesome kind of mates.
He shrugged, nonplussed by Knox’s explanation. “Okay.”
Knox fumed, his face growing red. “No,” he shouted, making Ari whimper. “It’s not okay. She’s much too young. You’re much too young. This is unnatural. It goes against everything a mate should be. You just doomed her…and yourself.”
“But how?” Dane asked. He hadn’t doomed her; he’d protected her, helped her.
Hadn’t he?
“When you hit puberty and she’s still just a little girl, trust me, kid, you’ll know exactly how. Because I’ll be damned before I let you claim her before she’s of age.”
With that, he tucked Ari close and marched out of the room, fury vibrating out his every pore.

Book Spotlight - The Naked Truth by Lacey Wolfe

It’s amazing what one can find in strip clubs…

Josh Carter gets the shock of a lifetime when he shows up at a place of ill repute for a business meeting and sees the one that got away gyrating on the stage. Abigail Reese—the girl with so much potential, the girl that took his heart along with his body one night long ago—what brought her to this level?

Though stripping is not what Abigail set out to do, it’s putting food on the table and a roof over her daughter’s head. But just how much can she reveal to Josh without risking it all?

When Josh causes Abigail to lose her job, she has two choices: come clean about her past and her situation or push him out of her life as quick as he came into it. It’s up to her…only she has to think of her little girl too.

Excerpt:
Abigail removed the yellow gloves and went in search of water to curve her thirst. Whenever she was stressed out, she cleaned. As she sipped the water, pride filled her that her place sparkled and smelled of lemon and bleach. Now to get herself clean.
Setting the bottle down on the counter, she began to lift her shirt up over her head.
Knock knock.
Abigail pulled the edge of her tank top back down. She glanced at the clock and thought it was early for the mail man to be here, but he might’ve been ahead of schedule today. Then again, she wasn’t expecting a package at the moment, so it probably wasn’t the mailman. She stood on her tiptoes and peeked through the peep hole. Josh. What was he doing here?
Opening the door, she said, “Hailey’s at school.”
He held an envelope in his hand. He couldn’t possible have the DNA test results already. Then again, he had money, so anything was possible. “I’m here to see you. Can I come in?”
Abigail stepped back out of the way and let him enter.
“It smells good.” He glanced around.
“I was cleaning. I was just about to wash up before you showed up unexpected.”
He grinned. “I thought we could open this together.”
She eyed the white rectangle in his hand. “That’s for you. Not me. I know you’re the father. You were the last man I was with.”
“Before you found out you were pregnant?”
She laughed. “No, as in you’re the last man I’ve ever had sex with.”
“You don’t mean…”
“Oh, yeah, I mean it. I’m a single mother. I don’t have time to date.” He was quiet and she found it amusing. She could only imagine the thoughts running through his head. “Open it up.”
He set the envelope on the table next to him and closed the space between them. “It was five years ago that you and I were intimate. And in all this time, you’ve never gone to bed with another man?”
“You’re still on that?” Men.
His hand wrapped around her neck and he pulled her face to his. “Do you have any idea what it does to me to know I was the last one to touch you?”
She shook her head. “What does it mean to you?”
“How about I show you? Can I?”
She gazed at his lips and licked hers. Before she knew what was happening, she nodded and his mouth crushed against hers. He stole her breath when his tongue swooped in and met hers. She reached out and grabbed his shoulders, bringing her body closer to his.
Her body burst with pleasure, the same way she felt years ago. His arms wrapped around her and lifted her. Her legs intertwined with his waist. Josh spun her around, setting her on the same table the envelope was on.
He ended the kiss, but only to begin a trail on her cheek, to her chin, neck, and collarbone. “Oh God,” she murmured.
She arched into him as his tongue licked the top of her cleavage. Her core ached to be touched. She wanted this man badly. Instinct kicked in and she reached out, yanked a handful of his dress shirt, and smashed her lips to his. Her fingers began working his buttons. Once a few were undone, she slipped her hand inside his shirt and across his firm chest.
“You’re amazing,” he whispered before his thumb flicked over her nipple.
Abigail gasped and then went back to working on his shirt. Just as she reached the last button, she looked up at him and saw the passion in his eyes. But then she wondered what she was doing. Should she be doing this with him? She barely knew the man and for all she knew, when he returned home, she may hear from him again. She couldn’t risk it.
She pushed him away and hopped off the table.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“We can’t do this.”
He came up behind her. “We don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”
Oh, she wanted to. And her soaking wet panties were all the confirmation she needed. But her heart couldn’t handle it.
“I think you should go.”
“What about the results?”
Abigail turned back toward him. “Like I said before, those are for you. I don’t need to see them.” She left the room for the shower she had originally set out for earlier.
